The compressed air standard ISO 8573-1:2010 is one of the most widely used standards for compressed air purity.
The three main contaminants in compressed air are solid particles, water, and oil; these contaminants are classified using compressed air purity classes.
These compressed air purity classes group concentration ranges for each of the above contaminants, with each range assigned a specific purity class index. The limits of each range are linked to values determined under practical operating conditions.

How to Achieve the ISO 8573-1:2010 Compressed Air Quality Standard
Solid Particle Concentration (Particles)
Compressed air particle requirements can be achieved relatively easily by installing inline air filters in the piping system. Depending on the required purity class, the appropriate filter grade should be selected to meet the specified particle limits.
Water Content (Water)
The water content in compressed air is determined primarily by the type of air dryer used in the compressed air system:
Pressure dew point above +3°C (Class 4 or lower):
Use a refrigerated air dryer.Pressure dew point below +3°C (Class 3 and higher):
Dew points of −20°C, −40°C, or −70°C require a desiccant (adsorption) air dryer.
Oil Content (Oil)
To reduce oil content in compressed air, an activated carbon filter can be installed in the pipeline. This solution can achieve oil content Class 1 or lower.
For the strictest requirement, Oil Class 0, an oil-free air compressor must be used, ensuring that no oil is present in the compressed air under any operating condition
Compressed Air Quality Standards for Pharmaceutical and Medical Applications
The pharmaceutical and medical industries are among the sectors with the highest requirements for compressed air quality. Because compressed air can directly or indirectly affect human health, all potential contaminants must be strictly controlled and eliminated.
Oil Content
For pharmaceutical and medical applications, the oil content in compressed air must meet the highest purity requirement – Class 0. This means absolutely no oil is permitted in the compressed air under any operating condition.
To achieve this level of purity, only oil-free air compressors can be used.
Dryness of Compressed Air (Water Content)
For applications where compressed air is used solely to operate pneumatic cylinders, it is sufficient that no liquid water is present in the air. In such cases, a pressure dew point between +3°C and +10°C is generally acceptable.
However, if compressed air has the potential to come into contact with pharmaceutical products or medical devices, the requirements are significantly stricter. A pressure dew point of −40°C or lower is typically required, which necessitates the use of a desiccant (adsorption) air dryer.
Particle Concentration
The concentration of solid particles—especially larger particle sizes—must be minimized. This is achieved by installing high-efficiency particulate filters with filtration ratings of 0.01 microns or finer.
Microbiological Contamination
When compressed air quality specifications include microbiological limits, sterile or microbiological air filters must be installed to remove unwanted microorganisms and prevent contamination.
